The incident took place in New Haven County around 10:15 a.m., on Sunday, July 17 in West Haven.
The men were caught after state police at Troop G received multiple 911 calls of a group of six vehicles racing, weaving in and out of traffic, and using the shoulder of the roadway to pass on several roadways, including I-95, said the Connecticut State Police.
As troopers attempted to pull the vehicles over, one pulled to the shoulder as the others took off. The driver of the first vehicle that stopped was identified as Mazamil Qahir, age 18, of Trumbull in Fairfield County, state police said.
One of the vehicles that continued southbound crashed after attempting to weave between vehicles. The driver of the crashed vehicle was identified as Jordan Couto, age 28, of Orange, police said.
Furthermore, a third vehicle circled back to check on Couto and was recognized as one of the racers with the operator being identified as Joshua Colon, age 24, of Milford, state police said.
Couto, Colon, and Qahir were all taken into custody.
Couto and Colon were charged with racing and reckless driving.
Qahir was charged with racing, reckless and reckless endangerment.
All were released on a $2,500 bond.
Zwar Chaudry, age 28, of Hamden, who provided false information to officers when he came to bond one of the men out, was charged with driving a vehicle under suspension and interfering/resisting arrest.
He was released after posting $2,500.
The other drivers were not captured, police said.
